Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wrote many letters to his daughter Indira gandhi in the summer of 1928 when she was in Himalayas at Mussoorie. They were personal letters addressed to a little girl,ten years of age.They were quite informative , telling a child about the world. Some of his letters were on the topics like

The 15-Day Celebration of Chinese New Year

In china people celebrate their new year for 15 days. The first day is for welcoming the heaven and earth gods. On the first day of the New Year people refrain from eating meat since it is believed that it will ensure long and happy life.

On the second day they pray to their ancestors and all gods. All the dogs are feed and it is believed that the second day of the New Year is the dog’s birthday.

On the third and fifth the sons in laws pay respect to their parents in law.

On the fifth day all people will stay in their home to welcome the god of wealth. This is called as po woo. On this day no one will visit their friends or relatives since it may bring bad luck to both the parties.

From the sixth to the tenth day the Chinese will visit their friends and relatives. They also go to temples to pray for good wealth and health.

Farmers display their produce on the seventh day. On the eight day Fujian people will have reunion dinner with another family and pray to god of heaven at midnight.

People make offerings to the jade emperor on the ninth day.

On the tenth, eleventh and 12th day’s friends and relatives should be invited for dinner.

On the 13th day people will have simple rice congee and mustard greens to clean their system.

14th day is dedicated for the preparation of lantern festival.

15th day is the celebration of the Lantern Festival.
